Certified Production Technician (CPT)
he purpose of the Certified Production Technician (CPT) ® 4.0 certification program is to recognize through certification, individuals who demonstrate mastery of the foundational, core competencies of advanced manufacturing production at the entry-level to front-line supervisor through successful completion of the certification assessments. The goal of the CPT 4.0 certification program is to raise the level of performance of production technicians to help employers ensure their workforce increases the company’s productivity and competitiveness.
This program is ideal for individuals with limited to no prior knowledge of manufacturing to begin a career pathway in the high skill, high wage, in demand manufacturing industry.
The CPT 4.0 program consists of five individual certificate assessments:
- Safety
- Quality Practices & Measurement
- Manufacturing Processes & Production
- Maintenance Awareness
- Green Production (Not part of Full CPT Certification)
Candidates must earn the first four certificates to receive the Full CPT 4.0 certification.
ASSESSMENTS
Individuals demonstrate their understanding of the core skills and knowledge through five assessments (including the optional Green Production) based upon MSSC’s industry-defined, nationally validated skill standards. Delivered online or paper pencil, this assessment contains 80-101 multiple-choice questions. MSSC strongly recommends that individuals be at a 9th-grade math and 10th-grade reading level.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Based on extensive research with leading industry subject matter experts, MSSC has selected a list of nine rapidly emerging, data-intensive, “Industry 4.0” technologies that will profoundly influence manufacturing production processes and quality control. MSSC has embedded these technologies in its 2020 “Industry 4.0” Edition of its National Production Standards. These technologies include:
- 5G
- Artificial Intelligence (AI)
- Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT)
- Additive (3D) Manufacturing
- Autonomous Robots
- Augmented Reality
- Data Analytics
- Nanomanufacturing
- Advanced Materials
What does this mean for the MSSC Community? These “4.0” technologies will be fully integrated into the CPT program by the beginning of 2021. MSSC manufacturing certificates and certifications issued after that date will be re-labelled “CPT 4.0.” MSSC’s goal is to provide CPT 4.0 technicians with a foundational understanding of these technologies on which to build as their companies use them in various ways on the factory floor.
DESCRIPTION
The Green Production Certification Program applies to all frontline production technicians in all sectors of manufacturing. The eligible population for this certificate expands far beyond just technicians in green product sites (e.g., wind, solar equipment producers).
Green Production is defined as workplace activities across all industries within the manufacturing sector that require the use of equipment, technologies, and processes that will improve the environmental performance of manufacturing companies.
This module is based on industry-defined, nationally validated national skill standards and includes a comprehensive set of system tools: curriculum, textbook, e-learning, instructor certification training, a national registry, assessments, and credentialing.
